Per rispondere alle sfide poste dai cambiamenti climatici, dall’erosione della biodiversità e del capitale naturale e dalla necessità di raggiungere uno sviluppo sostenibile le nostre società hanno bisogno di conoscenze ed innovazione. Per questo l’Unione Europea ha rilanciato con forza lo sviluppo di Infrastrutture Europee di Ricerca, particolarmente in ambito ambientale. LifeWatch ERIC, infrastruttura per la ricerca su biodiversità ed ecosistemi è una di queste nuove infrastrutture su cui l’UE punta per dare una risposta alle grandi sfide che abbiamo davanti. Approfondire la conoscenza e formare competenze su temi è anche una priorità dell’Università del Salento che ospita una sede Europea di LifeWatch ERIC e promuove corsi di laurea innovativi su sviluppo sostenibile e cambiamenti climatici nel territorio brindisino. Alberto Basset è professore ordinario di Ecologia e Delegato del Rettore per la Sostenibilità nell’Università del Salento ed è responsabile dell’URT presso l’Università dell’Istituto di Ricerca sugli Ecosistemi Terrestri. E’, inoltre, membro dell’Executive Board e rappresentante Italiano nell’Assemblea Generale di LifeWatch ERIC nonché membro della Commissione Scientifica Nazionale per l’Antartide. I suoi principali interessi di ricerca sono sull’organizzazione della biodiversità e sul funzionamento e sui servizi degli ecosistemi, con una particolare attenzione agli ecosistemi acquatici. Su questi temi ha prodotto oltre 150 lavori su riviste scientifiche internazionali. Nella comunità della ricerca ha occupato la posizione di Presidente della Società Italiana di Ecologia e dell’European Ecological Federation ed è attualmente Presidente dell’Euro-Mediterranean Federation of lagoon networks. Attualmente è Associate Editor di Frontiers in Marine Ecosystem Ecology e membro dell’Editorial Board di altre riviste internazionali.
Climate change, biodiversity and natural capital erosion, natural resources overexploitation challenge the social and economic development at all scales and highlight the risks of an unsustainable development. To address these challenges, the European Union has launched new European scale Research Infrastructure, particularly on the Environment, supporting a new competitiveness of the European Research able to move challenges and risks into opportunities and development. LifeWatch ERIC, the European eScience Infrastructure on biodiversity and ecosystem Research, is a first response of the EU to address these challenges and one of the research excellence of the University of Salento, which bases his strong effort on new and innovative study courses on the sustainability of our development in the current context of changing climate on the Research Infrastructures. Alberto Basset is full professor of Ecology and pro-rector for Sustainability at the University of Salento and Director of the Lecce seat of the Research Institute on Terrestrial Ecosystems of the National Research Council. He is member of the Executive Board of LifeWatch ERIC, the European eScience Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research, being also Italian representative in the General Assembly. His main research interests are in biodiversity organization and ecosystem functioning and services, with a focus on aquatic ecosystems, being author of more than 150 papers in ecological journals on these topics. In the European research community, he is member of the Council and former President of the European Ecological Federation, current President of the Euro-Mediterranean Federation and past President and member of the Board of the Italian Society of Ecology. He is currently serving as Associate Editor of Frontiers in Marine Ecosystem Ecology and member of the Board of other journals.
